Road cycling usually involves cycling a set course & distance on tarmac roads on a lightweight bike designed for speed - giving the cyclist a decent surface and often an exhilerating pace.
Governing body
British Cycling promotes road cycling in the UK and is responsible for issuing rules and licences that govern the organisation of events.

If you just want to ride for fun, there are plenty of leisure rides taking place across the UK and further afield. British Cycling also has a website dedicated to
everyday cycling.
Clubs
The best way to get into the sport is to join a local club - someone there should be able to explain how category, classification, points and rankings all fit together.
