The Bernese Oberland is justly famed as the most dramatic region of Switzerland, but the romantic names of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Schilthorn are but part of the story. The Oberland also possesses villages tucked away in the quiet, sheltered valleys, where you will find lots to do. For walking, few regions are the Oberland's equal.

"Lake Oeschinensee is not to be missed. The kids will love travelling up there by gondola, and the lake itself is gorgeous - I can still picture the turquoise water sparkling in the sunlight. We crossed the meadows above the lake to a small mountain cafe and enjoyed a drink on a wooden bench with just a couple of cows for company."

Well-waymarked paths offer thrilling views at every turn, with vivid green meadows, carpeted in flowers, giving way to dramatic, snow-capped peaks. Thanks to the efficient and varied public transport system, you can easily shorten ascents and routes by taking cable cars or buses, thus making the walks accessible to all the family.
