Trip details
This tour is the second half of Wainwright's classic route for people who have already walked the first half or have less time and want to explore the scenery of the Pennines and the North Yorkshire Moors. Start at Kirkby Stephen' an old market town on the western fringes of the Pennines, and end at the quaint seaside village of Robin Hood's Bay on the East coast. You will spend the first part of the trip crossing the Pennines and walking in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Next you cross the Vale of Mobray before crossing the moors to reach the coast and the North Sea.

In Kirkby Stephen visit the church with its famous 8th Century 'Loki Stone before setting off to climb to the mysterious 'Nine Standards Rigg. You enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park where two days are spent walking through the long valley of Swaledale, with its old mine workings, dry stone walls and unspoilt villages. You reach the historic town of Richmond with cobbled streets, sloping market square and famous castle perched above the River Swale. Beyond the arable farmland of the Vale of York, you ascend onto the heather moorlands of the North York Moors, a region of long vistas and easy walking. After crossing the wooded valley of Eskdale you reach the dramatic cliffs of the North Sea Coast. The last few miles follow the scenic cliff top path to the red-roofed village of Robin Hood’s Bay. With an extra night here, you can relax on the beach or visit nearby Whitby with its ruined abbey (associated with the Dracula legend) and its Captain Cook Museum.
