Trip details
Designed for families who want to visit Egypt with their children, this tour combines visits to the pyramids & sphinx, museums and Pharaonic tombs with some more adventurous activies including a camel trek and overnight felucca sailboat cruise. Our guides are specially selected for their skills with families & children, and group sizes are kept small to ensure you get as much as possible out of what we hope is a once in a lifetime holiday.
Starting in Cairo, we visit the majestic pyramids and sphinx at Gisa and learn how Papyrus scrolls and paints are made. We also enjoy a fun camel ride at the pyramids. Our next tour spends time in the Egyptian Museum with its famous Tutankhamun exhibition and mummy room, and Coptic Cairo with its ancient churches and narrow streets.
Leaving Cairo, we take the overnight sleeper train to Aswan where we visit the beautiful island Philae Temple by boat, before visiting a local school and enjoying a traditional meal in a nearby Nubian village or restaurant. During school term times we include a mixed English/Arabic language lesson at the school with the children on our tour and local Egyptian school children. We also have some free time in Aswan to explore the markets, walk along the Nile, or relax by the child-friendly pool in our 5-star hotel.
The following morning we have some free time with an option to visit the temples to Ramses II at Abu Simbel. These spectacular temples were painstakingly dismantled and rebuilt when the Aswan Dam was built and the lake flooded and are many peoples' highlight of a tour of Egypt's historic sites.
Next we board a traditional felucca sailboat for an overnight cruise, heading downriver on the Nile from Aswan towards Luxor. Watching rural Egyptian life pass by on the riverbanks as you relax on board a felucca is one of Egypt's most enjoyable activities. Our Nubian crew cook all our meals and entertain us in the evening as we sit around a campfire singing songs and telling stories before we sleep on board the boat. Life-jackets for adults & children, mosquito nets, and a support vessel with toilets and shower are provided. The next morning we sail a little further on the Nile before driving to Luxor.
A luxury Nile cruise upgrade option is available for those who would like some more comfort instead of the felucca. You sail all the way to Luxor and see all the same sites plus Edfu temple.
In Luxor, the 'world's largest outdoor museum', we have selected a range of the most important and interesting sites that the children in the group will enjoy but not find over-tiring. These include the Pharaohs' tombs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queen Hatchepsut's temple on the West Bank of the Nile, while on the East Bank, we explore the huge temple complex at Karnak.
Finally, we return to Cairo on the sleeper train and visit the Citadel high on a hill overlooking the city, and explore the chaotic Khan-el-Khalili bazaar before enjoying a final taste of Egypt on a Nile dinner cruise with a sufi & belly dancing display.
The tour uses 4 and 5-star hotels with swimming pools ,and options are available to upgrade the felucca to a luxury cruise, visit Abu Simbel, enjoy a hot air balloon flight, or extend the tour with extra days in Cairo.
Our small-group departures start on Saturdays, and during half-term holidays the tour is designed to be easily shortened by a day so you can fly home on Sunday if necessary to allow the children to start school again on Monday. Private departures just for your family (or families) are also available on other dates.
Our Egyptian Family Adventure is a longer 13-day version of this tour and runs alongside this itinerary for the first 8 days, but then heads from Luxor to the Red Sea for some snorkelling and relaxation before returning to Cairo.
