When it comes to raising money for a good cause, there are loads of great charity challenges taking place all over the UK, writes Elaine Aronson, timeoutdoors' Challenges Editor.
From walks and races over land and water to tumbling from the skies attached to a rope or a parachute, whatever your cause, there’s going to be a UK challenge to put your name to and start getting sponsorship for.
It’s part of the make-up of the Great British public to generally have a bit of a grumble and do ourselves - and our surroundings - down. But the fact of the matter is that few places on Earth can boast such a stunning and diverse landscape. And taking on a charity challenge is a brilliant way of getting yourself out into all that natural beauty.
Something for everyone
Charity challenges are big business in the UK and over the years have grown to encompass just about every sporting activity you can possibly think of.
Those with a head for heights and a love of walking will be salivating at the prospect of the various Three Peaks challenges, other peak challenges and a wide range of challenge walks.
Runners can choose from a 5K or 10K run, half marathon or full marathon, whilst those with sea legs can test their mettle and skills with a sailing challenge or a swim. Adrenaline junkies can get their fix abseiling, zip sliding or skydiving and if getting in the saddle is your thing, there are dozens of charity bike rides all over the country. Alternatively, why not take on a swim, bike and run in a triathlon or all sorts of activity combinations in a multi-activity challenge?
Velothon Wales promises to deliver a weekend of cycling on a scale that Wales has never before witnessed. Up to 15,000 riders will make history as they roll across the start line in the heart of Cardiff and embark on a closed road cycling sportive that takes in some of Wales’ most breath-taking scenery.
Ballot entries are now closed - so the main way to enter "The London Marathon on Wheels" is by getting a charity place.
Here you will find charities who have places, their cause & what benefits they offer their cyclists. Plus some are offering FREE registration...
So, you want to do something for charity but don’t fancy running, swimming (that’s too cold) or walking (that’s too slow)? Why not try the nation’s new favourite sport and get on two wheels for a charity bike ride?
