Walking gives us a sense of independence and freedom; to go out where we want and when we want. But there are many benefits of joining a walking group that has a regular programme of led walks, especially when you desire to venture into more challenging terrain where you would not feel confident on your own. Walking with others and/or with an experienced leader can enrich your experience in the outdoors.
Two easy ways to find a club:
Part of the Ramblers', Darlington Dales & Hills is a fairly new group based in the Tees Valley area covering County Durham, The Yorkshire Dales, The North York Moors and The Cleveland Hills. Catering mainly for members in their 20s, 30s and 40s (but there really is no upper age limit), it's the only such walking group between Northumbria and York.
Experts from Alan Hinkes OBE to Chris Townsend advise on everything you need to know to find your feet in the great outdoors: starting out, kit, training and hill-walking courses you could go on to improve your skills and safety.
