Mountain biking in the sunny Sierra Nevada

If you have resolved to make 2014 the year you finally do a triathlon – or any other kind of 'athlon (or 'athon) - and you're trying to get into shape, consider taking a week's 'break' at a training camp. There are dozens of these places to choose from in southern Spain and Portugal: you'll get fit very quickly and the momentum gained, and self-discipline instilled, should continue when you get home. Most camps also run courses for people just starting out on their fitness programs. There are specialist training camps for cyclists, too.

Activity holidays in Europe come in all shapes and sizes, but for something a bit different how about actually taking part in an event? There are lots of companies out there who can arrange packages for marathon runners, for example. You'd already need to be well trained up to take part in the Barcelona Marathon (March 16) or the Rome Marathon the following week; if you're starting out from scratch with your training, running-holiday highlights later in the year include Prague (May 11), Stockholm (May 31) and Reykjavik (August 23).

The Spanish landscape in early spring

The walking season begins in Mediterranean countries around the end of February, although in much of the rest of Europe it doesn't get into full swing until the latter half of April (around Easter this year). March can be a spectacular time to take a walking holiday in places like the Sierra Nevada or Sierra de Aracena in southern Spain, or perhaps the Turkish coast (one day, I'm going to do the Lycian Way along the south coast - it looks amazing!): this early in the year the wildflowers are out, the weather can be beautiful – an early taste of spring.
