Over the last few weeks I've been doing a bit of training for my second challenge of the year, the Ripon Tour Sportive in July - a 100 mile route picking up the TdF route through the Yorkshire Dales. This is road bike territory so I've had to dust off my old Cannondale CAAD 3. Once I'd given it a quick service, I thought I'd go for a spin into Nidderdale and see how it goes, despite some misgivings about gears and the setup. And that's when the fun began.

This weekend was the first of my 2014 'challenges' - the Fountains 10k, based in my home village of Grantley near the world-heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal in North Yorkshire. For only the 2nd time in its history the race was full with 353 entrants setting out to test their mettle against a route which has earned a reputation locally as one of the hardest 10k's around.
