Making your way across the country from tip to toe is a mammoth endeavour, whether you do it by bike or on foot. Elaine Aronson, timeoutdoors' Challenges Editor, introduces this classic charity challenge.
What’s the ultimate test of physical endurance around these isles? The London Marathon? No. An Ironman triathlon? Nope. Sitting through the Eastenders omnibus? Hmmm, maybe. All of these pale into, if not insignificance, then relative ease when compared with the ultimate, 'End to End' ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats (or LEJOG).
CHOOSING YOUR ROUTE
There are many possible routes, each of which adds up to around 1,000 miles. Though the adventure in itself is enough to get you out there, why not give yourself a shot of extra motivation and put yourself through the time, strain and elation while raising money for a good cause?
Once you’ve decided on the route, the next decision is your method of transport. Driving is not an option, nobody will be impressed and, to be frank, it’s not a physical challenge if Jeremy Clarkson can do it.
The two most common methods are on a bike or on foot. Either way, you’re going to need to train, train and train again if you harbour ambitions of finishing in a reasonable time, and in a reasonable state.
For cyclists, start training comfortably and increase your distances. Diet-wise, get on those long-lasting carbs. A typical duration for the 1,000-mile route is just 12 days, which works out at more than 80 miles on the bike every day across often hilly terrain - no mean feat!
