CHALLENGE SUMMARY
This challenge will test physical, mental and emotional endurance in a weekend free from the constraints of modern technology – no phone to provide GPS, no uber to get you where you need to go, no restaurant to feed you and no luxury hotel room to keep you warm at night.
With experts on hand for key skills training and advice throughout the challenge, participants will truly have the chance to go back to basics and see if they can survive the wild.
Starting from base camp on Dartmoor, participants will be briefed on the journey ahead, taught some key survival skills and then set the challenge to make it to the coast. They will need to navigate across rugged terrain, forage for food, build shelters, make an indigenous fire and improvise some river transport to make their Dartmouth destination.

Survival expert, Ed Stafford, gives his 'seal of approval'
Ed Stafford, intrepid adventurer and Discovery Channel regular, is no stranger to being marooned in remote places and forced to survive the wild. He has given the Youth Adventure Trust’s ‘Race to the Sea: A Survival Adventure’ his seal of approval:
"This is a true journey of survival – the weekend will challenge you and push you to go beyond what you think you are capable of. You will learn a lot about yourself, gain a deeper understanding of the world around you and pick up some key survival skills along the way."
Itinerary highlights
Day 1: Friday 12th April
You'll arrive late afternoon/early evening and get launched straight into survival mode. Following an initial briefing, they will be expected to navigate to the base camp, start a fire, learn how to cook and prepare food in the wild (provided by us), and set up their shelter for the night (provided by us) before being given details of the challenge ahead,
Day 2: Saturday 13th April
A very early start for individuals to clear down their camp and head off on their journey to the river. Along the way they will need to collect essential items to help them survive the night and make their journey down the river the next day, as well as forage for food that will give them the energy to survive.
It will be a race against the clock to get to the site where they will need to build a shelter that will keep them dry and protect them from the chill of the April air during daylight hours. Team work will be essential if the group is to get a fire lit and dinner cooked, with enough time to start building their river transport that will get them to their final destination – the sea.
Day 3: Sunday 14th April
By Sunday, participants will be challenging themselves on all levels, battling fatigue, hunger and physical exersion. It will be an extremely early start to clear all trace of the overnight camp before beginning the river descent to Dartmouth. This final challenge will test their resolve to survive under pressure before heading back to civilisation. The Survival Adventure will be over at lunchtime and participants will truly be able to say they have ‘survived the wild’.
