A skydive for charity is an event that captures the imagination of potential sponsors unlike any other, writes timeoutdoors' Challenges Editor Elaine Aronson.
When it comes to raising money for charity, what better way to do it than out in the great outdoors, feeling the wind in your hair and a sense of total freedom? And what better way to feel the wind in your hair than tumbling through the sky, thousands of feet above the ground?
For many, this is a life-changing experience, one of the biggest thrills possible. But, for most, overcoming the fear is a huge challenge!
The numbers alone are enough to instill feelings of awe and admiration in even the coldest of hearts. Tell anyone that you’re jumping out of a plane at nearly 14,000ft (4,250 metres), or two and a half miles (4km), in the air, before free-falling for a minimum of 45 seconds followed by a five-minute parachute descent and they, hopefully, won’t be able to get their wallets out quick enough. And that’s just one jump option.
Of course, it goes without saying that these challenges are not for the faint-hearted. Jumping from a plane is something most of us have never had to do, and most of us would like to keep it that way. Help is at hand however, and a charity tandem skydive is a good place to start.
Having an experienced instructor strapped to your back will enable reassurance and confidence at the crucial moment. Far from being weak, it’s a sensible option, providing the thrill of the jump while maintaining your own safety.
Skydiving for charity is a personal challenge like no other. Take a look through the skydives and click for further details of the jump and charity/charities.
