As Elaine Aronson - timeoutdoors' Challenges Editor - explains, whitewater rafting on one of the world's great rivers is simply one of the most exciting ways you can raise money for a good cause.
A full-on encounter with nature in the raw, whitewater rafting does not disappoint. As the water surges through the rapids in a deafening roar, you''ll be hanging in there on a white-knuckle ride like no other.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Most challenges are several days in duration. The intense excitement of negotiating rapids are interspersed with quiet sections where you can watch the scenery drift past and, on the Zambezi, may be able to see wildlife along the river banks.
The mighty Zambezi river in southern Africa is the focus for most of what's available in terms of charity challenges. You'll receive some basic on-site training so don't need any past experience, and a qualified rafter will be on board at all times.
From time to time challenge events take place on such rivers as the Colorado in the USA, various rivers in the mountains of New Zealand's South Island, Nepal, India and Chile.
