Trek into the heart of the Grand Canyon on this adventure in the American South-West.
At 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and in places a mile deep, the Grand Canyon is undisputedly a breath-taking sight. Tick this Natural Wonder of the World of your wish-list as you camp by its rim and trek along its famed trails.
We’ll then explore the challenging landscapes of Zion National Park, before celebrating in the energetic Las Vegas – a complete contrast to the natural beauty we have immersed ourselves in!
Day 1: London – Phoenix
Arrive in Phoenix, capital of Arizona. Transfer to hotel for dinner and spend some time relaxing.
Day 2: Phoenix – Sedona – Grand Canyon (Trek approx. 3-4 hrs)
We drive north through the Sonoran Desert to the beautiful area of Sedona, known for its red sandstone landscapes and dramatic rock formations. We spend the day walking along the Oak Creek Canyon, getting used to the heat and the terrain. Our camp is near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Day 3: Grand Canyon (Trek approx. 6-8 hrs)
Today we head into the heart of the Grand Canyon! Following Bright Angel Trail, we walk in the footsteps of Native Americans, descending past 750 million years of rock layers – a humbling start to our trek. We may continue to Plateau Point, with the Colorado River below, returning via an arduously steep climb and pausing to find rock art created by Havasupai Indians hundreds of years ago.
Day 4: Grand Canyon – Zion National Park (Trek approx. 4-5 hrs)
We descend once more into the depths of the Grand Canyon, visiting the aptly-named Ooh-Ahh Point, and continuing through magnificent vistas to Cedar Ridge before climbing back up to the rim. We then leave the Grand Canyon and walk to the famous viewpoint at Horseshoe Bend, where the great Colorado River curves around a sandstone escarpment. The contrasting colours of the green-blue river and the pink-red rocks, which contour in the sun and shadows, make this a true highlight of our adventure. We drive into Utah, and to Zion National Park.
Day 5: Zion National Park (Trek approx. 5-7 hrs)
Today’s adventure zig-zags steeply up the red sandstone slopes of Mount Baldy and through the deep Echo Canyon gorge to Observation Point, where we are rewarded by magnificent vistas of the surrounding cliffs, mountains and monoliths. The rock sculptures have eroded into striking formations, and the lush valley of the Virgin River rests far below. Camp under the bright Utah skies.
Day 6: Zion National Park – Las Vegas (Trek approx. 3-4 hours)
Our last day sees us tackling The Narrows, often described as one of the best hiking experiences in the US. Walking upstream through the slot canyon, we often wade through shallow water, admiring the sculpted rock canyon walls towering above – a real adventure for our last day. We then drive through incredible wilderness scenery for the last time, crossing into Nevada and Las Vegas. We are free to relax and explore - it’s a real contrast to the past few days and great fun! Enjoy a celebration meal.
