Stretching 6000km in a dotted line across China, the Great Wall was begun in the 5th Century BC. As it snakes across the mountains it brings a sense of history which is difficult to grasp until you have had the opportunity to experience it.
Our trek is very varied, as we pass through woodland and terraced farmland, and follow the contours of the beautiful hills and mountains in remote areas north of Beijing. We follow old sections of the Great Wall, as well as restored sections with smooth flagstones and lots of steps!
This challenge is physically demanding and offers fabulous scenery and a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history.
Day 1: UK - China
Depart London for Bejing
Day 2: Arrive Beijing; transfer Huangyaguan
Transfer to the small town of Huangyaguan, where we can freshen up and relax before a trip briefing.
Day 3: Huangyaguan (Trek approx. 4 – 5 hours)
After a leisurely start, we have our first experience walking on the Great Wall. Steep steps give us a good idea of what lies ahead before we walk downhill back to Huangyaguan.
Day 4: Huangyaguan – Mountain Village (Trek approx. 7 hours)
Beginning where we left yesterday, we encounter ‘Heaven’s Ladder’, a steep climb of over 200 steps leading us up the cliff face. Fabulous views await at the top. Then we follow the contours of the old Wall until we head down into the valley below. We sleep in farmer’s houses, a real cultural experience.
Day 5: Mountain Village – Jinshanlin (Trek approx. 4 – 5 hours)
Today we take a steep path to re-join the Wall. An unrestored and crumbling section, we follow a path alongside it, with incredible views to the day’s highest point. Later we drive through the mountains to Jinshanling.
Day 6: Gubeiko – Jinshanling (Trek approx. 7 – 8 hours)
Our start point is just outside the village of Gubeiko. We walk through farmland to an un-restored yet well-preserved section of the Wall, dating back to the Qing Dynasty – the last dynasty to rule over this vast land. Steep sections are rewarded by stunning views of the Great Wall snaking along the hilltops.
Day 7: Jinshanling – Watchtower Panorama – Old Badaling (Trek approx. 6 – 7 hours)
We head up carefully restored steps into the mountains one final time. The scenery is superb with rolling purple hills dotted with watchtowers. After soaking up this breathtaking panorama, we meet our transport which takes us to Old Badaling.
Day 8: Old Badaling – Beijing (Trek approx. 3 – 4 hours)
Our final day of trekking takes us up to Shixiaguan (Stone Gorge) Wall, at Ancient Badaling. This recently restored stretch of the Great Wall rewards us with beautiful views and is rarely visited by other trekkers, making for a unique and historic finale to our trek! This evening we celebrate in Beijing.
Day 9: Beijing
Visit Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the must-see sight of Beijing. You are then free to explore or shop.
Day 10: China - UK
Fly Beijing to London
