Stretching for over 6000km across northern China and constructed over 2000 years ago, the Great Wall is arguably the world's most ultimate building project completed by human hands. Snaking over the mountains, this incredible feat of engineering brings a sense of history which is hard to grasp until you have had the opportunity to experience it.
This trek is very varied, taking you through woodland and terraced farmland in rural China, following the contours of the hills and mountains in this stunning and remote area to the north of Beijing. You will experience old sections of the Great Wall, as well as restored sections with smooth flagstones and lots of steps!
A physical yet demanding challenge which will reward you with fabulous scenery and views as far north as Mongolia, as well a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history.
Day 1: Depart London for Beijing
Day 2: Arrive in Beijing and transfer to Huangyaguan
Upon arrival in Beijing, we head over to the small town of Huangyaguan which will be the start of your trek.
Day 3: Huangyaguan (Trek approx. 4-5 hrs)
Our first day on the wall is within a beautiful valley in the Yanshan Mountains where we will tackle some steep sections, giving us a good idea as to what lies ahead.
Day 4: Huangyaguan – Mountain Village (Trek approx. 7 hrs)
Starting where we left off, we summit 'Heaven's Ladder' after a steep climb of over 200 steps to witness the fabulous views at the top. We rejoin the old Wall until we reach a mountain village and stay in local farmers' houses tonight, a real cultural experience.
Day 5: Mountain Village – Jinshanlin (Trek approx. 4 – 5 hours)
Saying goodbye to our hosts, we re-join an unrestored part of the Wall. We then drop down the hillside to scenes of rural life and enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains to Jinshanlin.
Day 6: Gubeiko – Jinshanlin (Trek approx. 7 – 8 hours)
We walk through villages and farmland until our path meets an un-restored yet well-preserved section that dates back to the Qing Dynasty – the final dynasty to rule over this land. Stunning views of the Great Wall snaking along the hilltops will inspire your every step until the final stretch to Jinshanlin, which is on restored Wall with lots of steps.
Day 7: Jinshanlin – Watchtower Panorama – Old Badaling (Trek approx. 6 – 7 hours)
We head up carefully restored steps which take us into the mountains one final time. The scenery is stunning with rolling purple hills fading into the distance, dotted with many watchtowers, very much like 'scales on a dragon's back'. You'll soak up this breathtaking panorama before we head down to our transport which takes us to Old Badaling.
Day 8: Old Badaling – Beijing (Trek approx. 3 – 4 hours)
Our final day on the wall takes us up onto Shixiaguan (Stone Gorge) Wall at Ancient Badaling. A recently restored stretch of the Wall which rewards us with scintillating views as far as the eye can see and is only occasionally visited by other trekkers, making it a very unique and historic finale to our trek! We then head to Beijing for evening celebrations to mark our achievements!
Day 9: Beijing
Your adventure concludes with visits to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the must-see sight of Beijing. Afterwards you are free to explore or shop in the nation's capital, home to over 13 million people!
