This epic journey starts where Christopher Columbus came ashore on the Caribbean and takes us through some spectacular scenery, with small towns and villages providing plenty of cultural flavour.
Riding on a mix of dirt tracks and roads, our challenge combines heat, humidity and hills – get set for an unforgettable adventure!
Day 1: UK – San Jose
Transfer to our hotel and relax!
Day 2: San Jose – Limon – Finca Pacuarito (Cycle approx. 56km)
We drive to the Caribbean Coast to start our epic ride! We follow the coast, at points cycling along the actual beach, before turning inland and riding through banana plantations.
Day 3: Finca Pacuarito – La Rita (Cycle approx. 72km)
We cross the Pacuare River by ferry, before riding towards the bustling town of Siquirres and continuing across the Caribbean lowlands to the town to La Rita.
Day 4: La Rita – San Rafael (Cycle approx. 83km)
Riding through lush vegetation and tropical plantations, we get a taste of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. We cycle through tropical rainforest to the Sarapiqui River – keep your eyes open for monkeys and exotic birds! Take a refreshing dip in the river before we head for San Rafael.
Day 5: San Rafael – La Fortuna (Cycle approx. 72km)
We follow rolling roads in the agricultural region of San Carlos, surrounded by plantations of citrus fruit. The hills become more challenging as we head to the town of La Fortuna near the active Arenal Volcano. We camp close to hot springs - perfect for soaking those tired muscles! Cycle approx 72km (5-7 hours)
Day 6: La Fortuna – Tierras Morenas (Cycle approx 68km)
Another hilly day, we take in the beautiful landscapes around the clear Lake Arenal, the country’s largest lake. Today’s views are a real highlight. We end our memorable and rewarding day with a steep climb up to the town of Tierras Morenas.
Day 7: Tierras Morenas – Miravalles Volcano (Cycle approx. 42km)
Crossing the Continental Divide, we are me with sweeping views over the Guanacaste plains and the Pacific coastline. We pass ranches as we ride dirt roads through the forested foothills of the Tenorio and Miravalle volcanoes, home to diverse wildlife.
Day 8: Miravalles Volcano – Hermosa Beach (Cycle approx. 77km)
A hilly morning is rewarded with an incredible 20km off-road descent to colonial Liberia, the centre of Guanacaste and one of the oldest cities in Costa Rica. Our final stretch takes us to Hermosa Beach on the Pacific Coast. Tonight a dinner celebrates our achievements!
Day 9: Hermosa Beach – San Jose
Relax and enjoy the beach before the drive back to San Jose.
Day 10: Depart San Jose
There may be time to explore before we transfer to the airport.
