This fantastic cycle challenge leads us along the stunning coastline towards Brazil's most iconic city, Rio de Janeiro.
The hills en route are fairly gentle, but there will be a couple of tough days of cycling and we will be glad to reach the beautiful little town of Paraty, tucked away on the historic Gold Trail. Having spent some time enjoying Paraty we continue onto the buzzing city of Rio, where we have time to explore and celebrate.
Day 1: Depart London for Sao Paulo
Day 2: Arrive Sao Paulo – Guaruja
Arrive São Paulo and transfer to Guarujá. We take the evening to prepare our kit for tomorrow, before dinner and a full trip briefing.
Day 3: Guarja – Jaquehy (cycle approx. 5-6 hours)
We'll take a short ferry ride to the mainland before riding along the coast to the small town of Bertioga. We cross several rivers which wind from their source up in the mountains through the lush forest down to the sea. We arrive at our pousada, within a stone’s throw of a lovely white sandy beach.
Day 4: Jaquehy – Sao Sebastiao (cycle approx. 5-6 hours)
After a stretch along the coast, we climb through the dense rainforest which provides with fabulous views over the lush green interior and shimmering ocean. After the toughest climb of the trip, we're treated with an exhilarating descent to São Sebastião, with beautiful views across the water to Ilhabela.
Day 5: Sao Sebastiao – Maranduba (cycle approx. 5-6 hours)
We set off through São Sebastião and head on to Caraguatatuba along hillier and wilder terrain. Later on, we'll have long stretches next to the sea and can enjoy the more open, palm tree-lined roads with views of the surf pounding on the white sands.
Day 6: Maranduba – Picinguaba (cycle approx. 6-7 hours)
We follow the coast around to Ubatuba before cycling past more white sandy beaches on our way towards Picinguaba. This conservation area beautifully preserves the way of life of the caiçaras, the traditional inhabitants of this coastal area.
Day 7: Picinguaba – Paraty (cycle 3-4 hours)
A ride through dense tracts of rainforest brings us to Paraty, where we can see the wide curving bay, scattered with isolated beaches and green forested islands. It’s an incredible place to end our ride, and we should have plenty of time to explore its picturesque cobbled streets. We meet up again for dinner and celebrate our achievements this week.
Day 8: Paraty – Rio de Janeiro
We have free time to enjoy Paraty before loading up and driving to the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. This iconic city is home to Carnival and the Maracanã football stadium, as well as world-famous beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, and known for its larger-than-life party atmosphere and beautiful views.
Day 9: Depart Rio de Janeiro
Today we have plenty of time to enjoy Rio, before transferring to the airport for our flight home.
