Conquer the Outeniqua Pass - from both sides
Take part in the world's largest timed cycling event
Day 1: UK - Johannesburg
Fly to Johannesburg
Day 2: Port Elizabeth - Jeffrey's Bay
A short flight takes us to Port Elizabeth before we transfer to Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa’s surf capital. After preparing our bikes, we can explore and watch the surfers.
Day 3: Jeffrey's Bay - Storms River (Cycle approx. 105km)
We follow the coast for a relatively flat warm-up before reaching the hills around Humansdorp. The route flattens out again as we ride through the beautiful Langeberg Mountains before reaching Storms River, in the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma National Park.
Day 4: Storms River – Wilderness (Cycle approx. 147km)
Today’s ride takes us through the heart of the Garden Route. A steep ravine climb brings us to Bloukrans Pass, a testing challenge dividing the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces. We climb again to unspoilt Nature’s Valley before a long descent takes us into Knysna and on to Wilderness; a wild and beautiful area behind a long beach with crashing surf.
Day 5: Wilderness – Hartenbos (Cycle approx. 115km)
We set out on our ‘Afrix-Roubaix’ detour, avoiding the busy main roads to George. The Outeniqua Mountains form the backdrop to the Garden Route, and we ride up to the pass amidst dramatic mountain scenery. We then return and tackle the pass from the other side before treating ourselves to a well-earned descent towards the coast and Hartenbos.
Day 6: Hartenbos - Hermanus (Cycle approx. 92km)
We drive to Riviersonderend where we begin our ride through wheat fields, rolling hills and vineyards.
Day 7: Hermanus - Gordon's Bay - Cape Town (Cycle approx. 80km)
Today’s ride must rank as one of the most scenic cycling routes in the world! Rejoining the coast, we head around the undulating headlands, past Betty’s Bay and Rooi-Els, before coming to Gordon’s Bay and the end of our ride. We are greeted by vistas across the vast False Bay to Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope. Celebrate with an invigorating swim and obligatory beach-and-bike photos! This afternoon we drive into Cape Town.
Day 8: Cape Town Cycle Tour Sportive (Cycle approx. 109km)
Our challenge coincides with the largest timed cycling event in the world! Ride the closed roads of Cape Peninsula with 35,000 other cyclists in this exciting event. The route is hilly, but after a week in the saddle, you’ll be fully prepared! In the evening a celebration meal marks our achievements.
