Borneo is well-known for its vast areas of ancient rainforest and high biodiversity, which keeps many endangered animals including the orang-utan.
Malaysian Sabah occupies the north-eastern corner of Borneo, and is a land of dense jungle, mountains, rushing rivers and friendly traditional villages. Our challenging trek takes us through the lush rainforest of the Crocker Range before tackling the highest mountain in Malaysia and Borneo – the spectacular and demanding Mount Kinabalu (4095m).
Day 1: Depart UK
Day 2: Arrive Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
This bustling city is known widely as KK. Dinner and trip briefing at the hotel.
Day 3: Kota Kinabalu – Crocker Range National Park (Trek approx. 5 hours)
We drive to the Crocker Range National Park where stunning jungle-covered mountains separate the coast from the interior. Trekking on jungle paths, we pass native villages into the undisturbed rainforest. It’s very atmospheric, with rushing streams, buzzing insects and melodic bird-calls high in the canopy. Tonight’s host village offers wonderful insight into the lives of locals.
Day 4: Crocker Range National Park (Trek approx. 6-8 hours)
The muddy, overgrown paths we follow through the dense jungle were used by villagers who crossed the mountains to trade. We cross streams and jungle ridges on our way to a native village beside the river for the night.
Day 5: Crocker Range National Park – Kota Kinabalu
Today we trek into secondary rainforest, past more small villages and photogenic rice-paddies, before transferring to our hotel in Kota Kinabalu for a much-appreciated shower.
Day 6: Kota Kinabalu – Kinabalu Park – Laban Rata (Trek approx 5-6 hours)
We drive to Kinabalu Park, the gateway to the mountain. Kinabalu is a World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse spots on the planet. We trek through lush vegetation to a clear rocky plateau where we can see the mountain-top above us - an impressive sight with waterfalls cascading down the bare slopes.
Day 7: Laban Rata – Summit – Kinabalu Park (Trek approx. 6-8 hours)
We trek up to the summit in the dark, using our head-torches to light the way. Some parts are very steep, and we use the permanent rope bolted into the rock to pull ourselves up. A magnificent sunrise rewards us, and in clear conditions, we can enjoy views which stretch for miles. We descend the same way.
Day 8: Kinabalu Park – Poring Hot Springs – Kota Kinabalu
En route back to Kota Kinabalu, we stop at Poring Hot Springs - a wonderful way to soothe any aching muscles. Wander along the canopy walkway 100ft above the forest floor to observe flora and fauna. We then return to Kota Kinabalu for an evening of celebrations.
Day 9: Fly Kota Kinabalu – UK
We transfer to the airport for our flight home.
Extend your stay! Experience Borneo’s spectacular rainforest and wildlife at Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary, and take a safari on Malaysia’s second-longest river, the Kinabatangan - one of the best places to view wildlife in South-East Asia. Enquire for full details.
