On this incredible challenge, the route leads us through majestic sandstone gorges in Isalo National Park, then winds East to the ridges and lush valleys of Andringitra National Park where we aim to trek to the summit of Pic Boby, the second highest peak on the island.
Madagascar is a beautiful yet challenging destination and the rough, uneven roads make the journey long. But our efforts will be more than rewarded with the spectacular scenery and wildlife that Madagascar has to offer on this truly unforgettable trek.
Day 1: Depart London
Day 2: Arrive Antananarivo (Tana); transfer to Antsirabe
We arrive in Madagascar’s capital, Tana and transfer south to Antsirabe through the highlands - a beautiful introduction to the island.
Day 3: Antsirabe – Ranomafana National Park
We continue our drive. There’s great scenery to soak up on route to Ranomafana, an area of tropical rainforest. Look out for lemurs! We take a gentle night walk to stretch our legs.
Day 4: Ranomafana – Ambalavao
Early morning is the best time to see wildlife, so we keep our eyes peeled. Although we follow a well-used trail, it can be challenging after rain – a frequent occurrence! After lunch, we drive to Ambalavao.
Day 5: Ambalavao – Namoly – Belambo (Trek approx. 2-3 hours)
A beautiful but bumpy ride takes us to Andringitra National Park, where the remarkable domed granite peaks and sheer cliffs have eroded into fluted towers. Our trek begins at Namoly, the northern gateway, with great views of the mountains ahead as we head into the forests of Imaitso.
Day 6: Belambo – Andriampotsy (Trek approx. 6-7 hours)
Continuing through the forests we keep our eyes open for lemurs as well as colourful birds and wildflowers. We climb up onto a high mountain plateau; the views back down the Valley are wonderful. Our trail ascends to the foot of the Pic Boby mountain; enjoy a river swim at the end of the day.
Day 7: Andriampotsy – Pic Boby – Iataranomby (Trek approx. 8-11 hours)
Pic Boby is the second-highest peak on the island. We clamber a steep and rocky trail takes us to the summit, where far-reaching and impressive views over the Andringitra Mountains reward us. We descend via the so-called ‘alien track’, a surreal moon-scape surrounded by mountain panoramas.
Day 8: Iataranomby – Tsaranoro Valley (Trek approx. 5-6 hours)
Continuing downhill into the beautiful Tsaranoro Valley, we pass several Barabory villages, which provide a great insight into the way of life here. Our camp lies between Tsaranoro Mountain and the giant mountain chains of Andringitra National Park – the views are incredible, as is our sense of achievement!
Day 9: Tsaranoro Valley – Ambositra (Drive approx. 7-9 hours)
We explore Tsaranoro in the hope of spying some of wildlife. We then hit the road, heading north to the town of Ambositra, known for its woodcarvings and fine wooden houses.
Day 10: Ambositra – Tana (Drive approx. 6-8 hours)
Another day of driving takes us back through Madagascar to Tana.
Day 11: Free Time Tana; flight departs
Today we share in a final celebration meal to mark our achievements before transferring to the airport.
