A destination where you’re never far from an inspirational view, Nepal both awes and humbles visitors with its spectacular scenery and sincere people.
This amazing trek explores the fascinating culture of the magnificent Langtang region of the Himalayas, open again to hikers following 2015’s devastating earthquake.
Culminating in one of the districts that suffered most from the natural disaster, we end our trip by getting involved in practical work, a rewarding way to give something back to this magnificent country.
Day 1: UK - Nepal
Depart London for Kathmandu
Day 2: Arrive Kathmandu
Transfer to hotel for dinner and briefing.
Day 3: Kathmandu – Syabrubesi
We drive into Nepal’s ‘middle hills’ and arrive at Syabrubesi, starting point for tomorrow’s trek. The mountainous landscapes provi a marvellous introduction to our adventure.
Day 4: Syabrubesi – Lama Hotel (Trek approx. 4-5 hours)
We follow a trail through the forest; listen for monkeys chattering in the trees. The woodland forms a rich habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including the elusive red panda. We cross rivers and pass a series of beautiful waterfalls on our route.
Day 5: Lama Hotel – Langtang Village (Trek approx. 6-7 hours)
Today we trek higher, with exquisite views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Following the Langtang Khola river, we climb to Ghora Tabela (2970m), where vistas of the Langtang Lirung peak greet us. Zig-zagging higher we reach Thangshep, and then the lovely Tibetan-style village of Langtang (3430m).
Day 6: Langtang Village – Kyanjin Gompa (Trek approx. 4-5 hours)
We walk through yak pastures with photogenic mountain views, up through the valley. We pass mani walls, sacred Buddhist stone tablets, reaching Kyanjin Gompa, a popular place of pilgrimage flanked by impressive mountains. Continuing uphill, we hike to the memorable Lirung Glacier (4300m) before descending for the night.
Day 7: Kyanjin Gompa – Lama Hotel (Trek approx. 6-7 hours)
We retrace our steps down the valleys and pastures, returning to the lower wooded slopes.
Day 8: Lama Hotel – Syabrubesi – Nuwakot (Trek approx. 3 hours)
We trek down to the end of the trail at Syabrubesi and drive to Nuwakot. Away from the tourist trail, this region is very authentic.
Day 9: Nuwakot Project Work
Today we can give something back to this wonderful country by helping to rebuild the village after it was devastated by 2015’s earthquake. The emphasis is on sustainability, with careful attention to preserving the community's heritage and a long-term plan to help it to attract tourism to provide local income. We can help with a variety of tasks; experience is not necessary, but you should be willing to get involved.
Day 10: Nuwakot – Kathmandu
Continue your project work this morning, with time to explore this charming village. Later we drive to Kathmandu and relax before this evening’s celebrations.
Day 11: Nepal - UK
Fly Kathmandu to London.
