Aquabikes

A multi-sport variation of a triathlon, aquabike involves swimming and cycling but omits the running portion of that classic sport - often called a swim-bike-done! Otherwise, the two events are very similar in featuring one leg each of swimming and cycling, as well as a strictly overseen transition between the two.

Aquabike events are often entered by triathletes but have also got a fanbase of their own, with events popping up all over Europe. Most aquabike events will be found at the same location as a triathlon, allowing them to tap in on the atmosphere of these bigger events.

As with other multi-sports, there are multiple distances available for aquabike events:

Super sprint

Often involving no more than 15K, with the vast majority of that on the bike, these entry-level events are perfect for people new to aquabike.

Sprint

With an overall distance of less than 30K, sprint aquabike events are great for racing or beginners to the sport.

Standard distance

Involving a 1.5K swim and 40K cycle, standard aquabike races are identical to these sections of Olympic distance triathlons.

Middle distance

With an overall distance of between 60K and 100K, the swim portion of these events ranges up to 2K.

Long distance

The toughest version of aquabike, with an overall distance greater than 100K.

There are also kids aquabike events available, where as well as reducing the distances, organisers have adapted the race to keep the entire course within one venue. This multi-lapped approach means that parents can keep an eye on their children the entire way round.

Given the disciplines involved, there is some kit that is necessary for entering an aquabike event:

• Wetsuit, goggles and swim cap (the event organiser should provide the latter)
• Bike (what type will depend on whether you are on or off-road)
• Helmet
• Tri-suit or shorts
• Bike repair kit
• Hydration and nutrition

The combination of swimming and cycling makes aquabike a fast-paced event, attracting endurance athletes who fancy testing their speed and stamina. It's time to get involved!
