Sprint distance triathlons are the stepping stone towards the classic Olympic distance and you'll find a great variety on offer. It's also at this point that there starts to be a real mixture of pool-based and open water.
If it involves a pool then a sprint triathlon will be a swim of at least 400m, a bike ride which covers 20km and then a 5km run.
For open water, the bike and run minimums remain the same but you can expect at least 750m of swimming. Check with organisers but the age limit is normally 15 and upwards.

If you're about to switch to triathlon then let Lauren Bradshaw, the youngest physio at the London Olympics and an elite athlete in her own right, show you how.
