Route description
With a beach start and sea swim, lining up on the glorious Llanddwyn beach is an unforgettable feeling. The route is a simple out-and-back, but only the sea will decide whether you're pitted against calm waters or white-tipped waves!
Don’t believe the rumours that this Island is flat! There are plenty of climbs and descents on this bike route to keep you on your toes. Starting from Transition in the heart of Newborough Forest, climb up to the village of Newborough and take a right. Head round the sweeping bends and fast straights whilst also negotiating the tight village streets before turning left before the famous village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. You will then go onto Menai Bridge, catching a glimpse of the iconic suspension bridge before heading along the narrow coast road to Beaumaris. In Beaumaris, turn left and ride up Allt Goch; the Red Hill, a brutally steep climb before descending to Pentraeth. Some of the roads get noticeably narrower and are deserving of some respect. Pass through several villages, including Brynteg, Rhosmeirch and Trefor, continuing towards the seaside town of Aberffraw with stunning views of the coast. Riding through Malltraeth and on towards Newborough, descend the forest road once more and to Transition, ready to get your running shoes on.
Legend Triathletes complete 2 laps of the Standard run loop. With Newborough Forest once hosting the Commonwealth Mountain and Ultra Distance Running Championships, it's safe to say the trails on this section are world-class. Running through trees and catching glimpses of the sea and marshland within this forest is just magical, if you’re not distracted by how much your legs are now starting to hurt! We don’t make it easy either, the last 1.5km is almost entirely on sand - it makes the accomplishment of becoming a Sandman Legend all the more rewarding!

This was an event I had wanted to do after seeing it on TV and it did not disappoint. Everything was well set up and organised, with stunning views throughout from the sea swim to the forest run. It’s not an easy course with sea swimming and trail and sand running, but it’s definitely one I would return to. Pre-event and race-day information from Always Aim High was excellent. Highly recommended. Craig T
If I were only going to do one triathlon, this would be it. It’s well organised and set in a spectacularly beautiful location. The organisers were incredibly helpful when I needed to transfer an entry. Watching the Welsh Triathlon Series programme afterwards was a lovely bonus and really brought the experience back. Ruth P
Sandman Sprint Triathlon was brilliant. Very well organised in a stunning location with an ideal sea swim, great bike route and an interesting trail run. Staff were helpful and safety well managed, even when a diversion was needed. The finish experience was excellent and camping nearby worked really well. I loved it. Ruth P
Second time racing here and it remains the most beautiful and challenging triathlon I’ve done. From the choppy sea swim to the forest bike and beach finish run, everything about this event is special. Friendly marshals, a glorious location and a fantastic day out — no wonder it sells out. Tom F
The best triathlon I have ever done. A stunning location with a breathtaking Snowdonia backdrop, a challenging course, brilliant organisation, plenty of marshals and easy registration. You won’t regret signing up. Tom B
A unique and unforgettable event in a stunning location. Registration was slick and the event village had a great atmosphere. The sea swim was challenging but well managed, the bike route excellent and the run varied, beautiful and tough. A brilliant spectator-friendly event and a fantastic way to finish the series. Kate L
My first time doing this event and I knew as the sun rose over the beach it was going to be special. The course challenged me with my first sea swim, a hilly bike and a beautiful beach finish run. Organisation and support were perfect and I would thoroughly recommend this event. Helen W
I love this race. It’s a home event for me and really shows how beautiful Newborough is. With a sheltered bay swim, off-road run through forest and beach, and a central event village, it’s a spectacular triathlon. Sian W
I raced the full distance after saying “never again” the year before due to the waves — but I came back better prepared. A tough but rewarding course and a fantastic event once again. Sian A
Another fantastic triathlon to finish off the season. Our whole club uses this as a weekend away and it always delivers. A fast, friendly event that suits all abilities. Edward G
A must-do for all levels. Calm sea swim, well-organised transition, undulating bike course with stunning scenery and a great overall race experience. Chris K
I absolutely loved this event as my first Olympic-distance triathlon. Great setup, excellent organisation, stunning scenery and real value for money. I will definitely race again. Philip L
My first time at Sandman and it certainly won’t be my last. Communication was spot on, registration hassle free and staying nearby made it even better. A superbly organised event. Paul B
Fantastic race in an amazing location. Adrian M
Such a beautiful spot for a triathlon with rolling bike routes, gorgeous woodland and stunning views. Well organised as always, with only a small niggle around transition layout. Chris F
I was lucky with the weather and it made a big difference to enjoyment. Generally very well organised, but you do need to allow plenty of time if you’re driving. A great race overall. Lawrie P
