Expect the unexpected and embrace the whole experience to get the most out of your overseas marathon, says the British Military Fitness Race Team's David Hellard.
A self-confessed late-blooming sportsman, London-born David Hellard has led the London Marathon, starred in a BBC TV series and is now an OCR champion.
He didn’t find his running feet until his late twenties, completing his first marathon in 2009 before setting a PB of 2:44 in the 2012 Milan Marathon. He has raced in the London marathon on several occasions, even leading it at one point as part of a bet! But he now sets a far a more even tempo as one of the official London pacesetters and has completed over 20 marathons around the world, including Sierra Leone and the Marathon des Sables.
He's also made the journey from marathon runner to obstacle course racing champion and competes for the British Military Fitness Race Team, building up his strength and endurance through BMF classes. He's notched up a number of significant OCR victories along the way, including the Eliminator Marathon, the Great Urban Race and the Soldiers' Challenge.
He is perhaps best known for appearing on BBC2's Special Forces - Ultimate Hell Week.
