Snowkiting holidays

The new kid on the winter sports block, snowkiting - closely related to kitesurfing - is an amazing activity once you have mastered the technique. Adventure sports companies have cottoned on to its rapidly growing popularity and it's now possible to find a kiting holiday in a number of different locations.

Unless you have experience, you will - like most people - require some intensive training to understand the basics of snowkiting. This will occupy the first few days of your holiday. Whichever level you are at, you can expect to visit several beautiful locations in the company of a professional guide. All equipment, accommodation and food will generally be included in the price.

A fair proportion of packages will include other winter sport activities, perhaps snowmobiling, tobogganing, snowboarding or skiing. Some will offer snowkiting as an extra to a ski or snowboarding holiday.

The French Alps is a prime region for snowkiters, with some fabulous snowfields around Chamonix and Val d'Isere, close to the Grand St Bernard pass and further south around the Col du Lauteret. In the Swiss Alps the Simplon Pass region is a favoured spot, while Font Romeu is the principal location in the Pyrenees. The sport is also growing in parts of Sweden, Norway and Iceland, plus Bulgaria, Canada, the USA (New England) and New Zealand.
