Temagami is Canada’s undisputed canoe capital. There is no other region that can match Temagami’s combination of varied canoe routes, clear deep-water lakes, towering old growth forests, woodsy campsites, rugged hiking trails, and stunning scenery, including a variety of highland viewpoints.
Wetland areas feature wildlife viewing opportunities, including moose, beaver, foxes, wolves, lynx and other predator/prey species.
Hikers have access to an impressive network of trails that traverse rugged terrain and wind through ancient forests to reveal breath-taking lookouts.
Paddling and hiking through Temagami rejuvenates the soul and affirms why we are drawn to primitive landscapes far from our urban lives.

Temagami’s most popular canoe route – for good reasons. It features beautiful lakes, a gently flowing river, hiking trails through the region’s largest old growth forest stand, pictographs, terrific campsites, and great swimming. In short, it has it all.
This route has Ontario’s second highest point of land as its destination. The way there features larger lakes and beautiful scenery. Two hours of moderate exertion are required to climb Maple Mountain. Once at the summit, you are treated to an impressive 360 degree view, plus a good crop of blueberries in season.
A remote river route that traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in all of northern Ontario. The whitewater is moderate, the waterfalls are stunning, and the portages are, admittedly, challenging. Numerous hiking opportunities, including the Dry Lake Ridge. This trip is worth every bit of effort.
This is a great canoe route for those that enjoy smaller, charming lakes and more frequent portaging. This is a lesser travelled route that rewards the canoeist with quiet lakes and the feeling that you may be one of only a handful to travel this way. The Eagle Lake ridge is one of this route’s impressive features.
This is the route for canoeists that want to leave the crowds behind and exercise their remote canoe tripping skills. Seldom travelled even in the height of the season, the Pinetorch route features smaller lakes and solitude. It rewards the intrepid paddler with a true backcountry experience, and those often important ‘bragging rights’.
Best times to go:
Temagami can be enjoyed throughout the open water season – early May to late October. High water in May attracts whitewater paddlers to the region’s four major rivers. June is less busy as most families still have children in school.
Visitation increases in July and peaks in August – the month in which most Canadians prefer to take their vacation time. Visitation drops off significantly in late August as families prepare for the new school year.
September is perhaps the ideal time to visit. The weather is warm, the landscape is colourful, and backcountry travellers have the region largely to themselves.
While October weather is changeable, the well-prepared canoe tripper will enjoy the Temagami wilderness in full seasonal transition, and very few humans to share it with.
