The canoe epitomises Canada’s history.
Canada emerged in the wake of the birchbark canoes of the voyageurs, the legendary French Canadian travellers who were the engines of the fur trade.
Two centuries ago, brigades of 36-foot canoes plied the waters of the Great Lakes, moving furs and trade goods through the wilderness that would soon become Canada.
And to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, Naturally Superior Adventures is recreating the fur trade experience with the Lake Superior Voyageur Canoe Brigade on the world's largest freshwater lake. The program consists of six guided, all-inclusive wilderness adventures in replica voyageur canoes, each paddled by up to 12 trip participants.
Each "brigade" will consist of five to 10 days of wilderness canoeing on Lake Superior, suitable for all levels of outdoors enthusiasts.

David is the director and owner of Naturally Superior Adventures, an outfitter which leads guided sea kayaking and voyageur canoeing trips on Lake Superior and guided canoe trips on northern Ontario's rivers.
He was working as a forester in northern Ontario when he purchased the land at the mouth of the Michipicoten River and started a paddling business and wilderness lodge from scratch...
Without a doubt, this is the premier paddling trip on the Great Lakes. This 180km-long paddling adventure traces a roadless coastline, so you’ll have to set aside 10 days for our guided voyageur canoe trip. The reward: The timeless rhythm of wilderness travel through an enchanted landscape. In 2017 we’ll be accompanied by Becky Mason, the daughter of famous Canadian filmmaker and canoeing icon Bill Mason.
Join popular Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tamblyn on the fourth leg of our Voyageur Canoe Brigade, from Rossport to the Red Rock Folk Festival. On this five-day journey, you’ll explore the secret islands of the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area and listen to (or participate in) evening campfire jam sessions.
The glaciers retreated from the Lake Superior basin about 10,000 years ago, revealing a sculpted landscape of cascading waterfalls and terraced beaches that haven’t changed much.
The coastline of Lake Superior Provincial Park is punctuated by numerous sacred Ojibwa sites, ranging from the renowned pictographs (rock paintings) at Agawa Rock to the haunting monoliths of Devil’s Warehouse Island and Nanabozho's Rock. The coastline features a variety of geological formations indicative of the ancient Canadian Shield.
These islands offer sea kayakers a welcome oasis from the exposure of Lake Superior's rugged coastline to vast expanses of open water. This archipelago creates sheltered paddling conditions and provides numerous backcountry campsites. Battle Island, on the outer perimeter, boasts a historic lighthouse.
Best times to go:
Lake Superior is calmest - and warmest - in late July and early August, making this the prime time for a voyageur canoe trip. Still, you should always plan on being stuck on shore due to wind and waves one day in four.
With hiking trails, songbirds to observe and spectacular geology to investigate, being windbound is no hardship.
Try September for an inland canoe trip for stunning fall colours and minimal biting insects.
