You'll be immersed in Canada's Canoe Culture with these paddle-related adventures in Ontario - starting out with an overview at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough before learning paddling skills at the Madawaska Kanu Centre, followed by plenty of exhilarating whitewater rafting on the Ottawa River.

The jewel in the crown of Canada’s Mineral Capital since 1985 - a place to get inspired before a dig, find helpful information, and meet like-minded folk. And after a brief hiatus, it’s now back, bigger and better than ever before. The fully-restored heritage train station is once again home to the Highlands' premier Recreational Geology destination featuring more than 400 local specimens in a brand new, 1,200 square-foot showroom with modern lighting and displays.
This scenic lookout and its trails were built as a tribute to Canada’s Centennial. It provides spectacular views of the charming town of Bancroft, the Mineral Capital of Canada and surrounding hills of mixed forest, exposed cliffs and knolls of granite, feldspar and quartz of the Canadian Shield. Come watch the raptors soar!
Designated UNESCO World Heritage status, the 202-kilometre slackwater canal system that operates from Kingston to Ottawa, managed by Parks Canada is unique to North America. Engineered by British Colonel John By and the British Corp of Engineers with masonry craftsmanship of the Scottish it is a marvel to behold. Crank a crab with a Lock Master and experience the Rideau and its historical locks and settlements via a canoe or sea kayak.
Renowned for its diversity of flora and fauna, the river flows into the Rideau River through an ecotone known as the Land Between, a mix of limestone plains and Canadian Shield. The Tay River also functions as a canal that connects to the architectural attractive heritage town of Perth, having just celebrated its 200th Anniversary in 2016.
Located just outside Eganville, this is Ontario's natural underground wonder and has been welcoming visitors since the start of the 1960s. Head deep into the limestone caves to discover an underground maze of pathways carved out by the receding waters of the last ice age.
Best times to go:
The MKC season runs from May to end August, but the best months are July and August when waters are warm, there are no bugs, and it doesn’t matter if you are camping or staying in rustic Cabanas - the weather is perfect for a paddling vacation.
At OWL Rafting things go on a little longer, until mid-September. My favourite time is July when the water is already warm, yet still brimming from the freshness of spring - and summer's guests haven’t quite arrived.
