A great way of packing in a variety of activities in one go, multi-activity holidays and shorter breaks appeal to people looking for a program of thrills and excitement in the great outdoors.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The principal activities involved are things like rock climbing, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking - perhaps with some canyoning or coasteering, surfing or diving too. It obviously depends on the location - whether you are by the coast or deep in the mountains. The itinerary may focus on a single area, gorge or canyon or you may travel between different areas perhaps with a combination of coastal and mountain activities.
Alternatively, a weekend (or longer) package in the UK might be based in a purpose-built activity centre with zip-wiring, assault courses and various sports including things like archery and fencing.
You're likely to be in a small group. There's a wide range of clientele: many operators cater to families, school trips and club weekends as well as stag parties and hen parties. Out in the wilds of South America or Asia the backpacker market is a prime focus, ie groups of travellers who are staying in a location for a few days and want to sample some of the activities on offer. Some operators offer all-inclusve ten-day or two-week adventure holidays which might include some cultural travel and sightseeing but with the focus on the great outdoors.
All equipment will be provided. Many packages will be all-inclusive of accommodation and food, others will be half board. Wilderness trips may involve camping.
WHERE TO GO
Any tourist destination with a well developed outdoor pursuits industry is likely to offer this kind of package. In the UK it's primarily the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, Dartmoor and Cornwall, while purpose-built activity centres are scattered all over the country.
In Europe, you'll find the highest concentration in mountainous regions like the French and Swiss Alps. Elsewhere, New Zealand, Australia, Nepal, Thailand, Costa Rica, Peru and other Andean countries lead the way. See Popular Destinations, below, for more.
