A walking holiday gives you the chance to experience a destination in a meaningful way. timeoutdoors’ Travel Editor Tom Le Bas outlines the appeal.
There’s no better way of getting to know a region than by exploring it on foot. Proceeding at walking pace, one can appreciate the subtle details and rhythms of local life, the effect of the changing light on the landscape, the sights and sounds of the countryside. Travelling self-contained on your own two feet with no vehicle to worry about can be a liberating experience, and one that enables you to access some of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet.
We have divided our walking holidays into two main categories: rambling and trekking, with more details available by clicking the links below:
Rambling holidays usually emphasise the leisurely approach and tend to be self-guided hotel to hotel walking with your luggage transported by road. The terrain will be relatively undemanding and stopping off for lunch in a picturesque village is often a great pleasure.
For people who want high mountain scenery and/or a more extended period of hiking, there are trekking holidays. Treks are physically demanding with some major ascents and descents to take into account but the rewards are fantastic. Most will involve camping and some long days.

There are epic wilderness treks which can take weeks and get you way off the beaten track, but many stunning locations are also accessible to those who only have a day or two to explore. And it's all just a seven-hour flight from the UK.
Whether it's a stunning day hike or a 78km loop, Killarney features some of Ontario's most breathtaking walking routes.
Lake Superior is a wilderness mecca, offering developed hiking and backpacking trails which range from a couple of hours to week-long adventures.
