Overview

History and running in perfect settings.

Shires and Spires is a five-distance circular event on a mixture of trails and roads comprising a 10K, half marathon, new 3/4 marathon, marathon and ultra marathon with the atmosphere of a mini running festival on the day!

Each route takes in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside and the marathon and ultra feature the country houses of Holdenby, Althorp, and Cottesbrooke offering routes full of historical interest.

The half marathon, 3/4 marathon and marathon are on ever-changing terrain and provide a welcome change from the usual road races.

To spice it up even further, the events are run in a clockwise direction on even years (ie. 2024) and anti-clockwise on odd years (ie. 2025). Both give a different perspective on the scenic routes. Decide which you think is harder!

This event is part of Shires and Spires.

Enjoyed the challenge of the hills and the beautiful countryside. I will be back! Carrie C

My first 10km race and I loved it (hills and all!) Great atmosphere, well organised. I’ll be back, maybe for the half next time! Jo C

I would definitely recommend this run and looking forward to coming back next year! Caroline S

Was feeling very nervous about this half marathon as knew it would be challenging also worried I was going to get lost due to the rural course I could not have been so wrong brilliant course which was signposted where needed and lovely supportive marshalls. Communication was great and registering etc easy. I will definitely be back next year to try it clockwise surely it has to be easier?!! Claire L

As this was my first marathon I don't think I could have picked a better one for outstanding views of the beautiful Northamptonshire country side, the shear enjoyment of them helped me get through the hilly course. The organising of the event was fantastic and the marshalls where amazing and so supportive. Really glad I picked this one as I'm hooked on trail running now and will be comming back to this .. in the future. Thank you very much Simon and your hard working team. Stephen H
