Overview

Stowey Walking, the 'Walkers are Welcome' steering group for Nether Stowey and Over Stowey, will be holding their fifth walking festival this summer in and around the Quantock Hills and West Somerset coast. There will be a variety of walks to suit all abilities.

Many of the walks will have a theme with local experts leading each walk. Lynne Abbott from Stowey Walking said she was excited to have representatives from Somerset County Council, Friends of Coleridge, The Thomas Poole Library and the Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme involved in the walking festival who will be able to share their knowledge of the local area.

There will also be a challenge walk over four days covering all 50 miles of The Coleridge Way between Nether Stowey and Lynmouth. All walks will start and finish in the village of Nether Stowey. Weekend walks will end with tea and home-made cakes at St Mary’s Church Centre in Nether Stowey.

The Quantock Hills with its rugged heathland and narrow combes was the first wild area in England to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. The West Somerset coast has a wealth of wildlife as well as Jurassic fossils to rival those of the South coast. Nether Stowey was home to the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who found inspiration for his poetry from the nearby hills. Coleridge’s Cottage is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public. The village makes an ideal base for walking with its village shops, pubs and B&Bs.

The Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme is a five-year Heritage Lottery-funded project whose aims are to protect and restore the distinctive features of the Quantock landscape, improve management of the access pressures on the Hills, and make the health and well-being benefits of recreation more available to communities in the surrounding towns and villages.

Numbers for the walks need to be limited so booking is essential.

This event is part of Quantock Hills Walking Festival.
