Accommodation

Plenty of recommendations are available.

  • Plastic-free event
  • Public transport links
  • Recycling
  • Sustainability policy

The Brighton Half Marathon is working hard to become a truly sustainable race and is committed to constantly moving towards a more sustainable event from its planning stages right through to the delivery of the event itself.

A Park and Ride service has been in operation for the last 12 years which removes over 550 cars from the city centre.

Since 2019, it has completely removed over 60,000 single-use plastic bottles from the event itself. This has been achieved by replacing the on-course bottles with biodegradable paper cups, from which they achieve a 100% recycling/compost rate.

The energy drink distributed at the last two water stations is ‘HIGH5’ which is manufactured in Woodingdean, another great step towards reducing transportation carbon implications. At the finish line, plastic bottles were also removed and entrants were given a recyclable aluminium can of water.

10,000 plastic bags were removed from the fulfilment area and replaced with recyclable paper bags.

The race guide for the 10,000 runners is now sent out electronically, resulting in a saving of over 60,000 sheets of paper and printing.

Steps taken each year:

  • Large recycling bins are placed adjacent to each drinks station
  • There is an initial clear up of the areas by each fuel station by volunteers
  • City Clean are contracted in, the Local Authority in-house provider to support the race day so that all waste from the event is removed in line with the Local Authority rules on recycling across the city
  • Wherever possible, local suppliers are used to help reduce delivery miles
  • All lost property eventually goes to Sussex Beacon shops

The Brighton Half Marathon also commits to give due consideration wherever possible to :

  • Source local suppliers
  • Use and encourage use by suppliers of local, organic and fair-trade products
  • Encourage green travel initiatives, including use of public transport, lift sharing via liftshare.com etc
  • Implement comprehensive procedures to recycle as much as possible
  • Ban all disposable plastic servingware (plates, bowls, boxes, cups, cutlery, stirrers and straws) from the event village
  • Enforce on-site use of reusable cups and bottles as opposed to single-use water bottles
  • Encourage careful thought and consideration to our unique sight and to ‘Leave No Trace’

First time racing the Brighton half and I was really impressed with the setup, atmosphere and location. Super flat so managed to bag my first PB in a while. I will definitely be back again next year to try and improve on this! Thanks, William C

Absolutely love this event. Spectacular views going along the cliffs and seafront and a nice tour of the town. Busy enough to feel supported but not unpleasantly loud or crowded. A few hills but nothing too taxing - the worst bit this year was running into the wind. Loved the seagull medal and t shirt. Can't wait to come back. Suzi B

I love this race and this city; always well organised with unparalleled crowd support. Thomas

A great race in a great place. The Brighton half is a lovely race, with a good few thousand runners it has a big event feel and the start / finish line atmosphere is great. The medal is also a standout and was my favourite medal of 2021. A good course for getting a PB... if the wind is not too strong - as it is a relatively flat race. Connor D

A fabulous event! Great communication from the organisers. Very clear signage along the route. Incredible support. Fab medal! Kerry P

A great event and a fantastic course! If not running I'll love be a supporter as it was so well put together. Michael F

This is one of my favourite races. The organisation is great, the volunteers are awesome. The curse itself is well thought out and my support was able to see me 4 times on the way round. I will be signing up again for 2025. Daniel C

Fab event showcasing the best of Brighton’s scenery and supportive crowds and volunteers out in force. Fantastic organisation and feel good vibes raising much needed funds for local charity. Thanks - Will be back next year! David

Fab event. Good one to start the racing season . Fab if preparing for London Marathon which is usually in April. Yvonne N
