OCR events

Obstacle course races (OCR) blend running with challenges like climbs, crawls, carries and grip-heavy obstacles. Choose your region to find an obstacle race near you — or scroll down for events coming up.

OCRs range from beginner-friendly fun waves to seriously competitive races. You don’t need to be a gymnastic superhero — but you *do* need steady cardio, a bit of strength, and the willingness to get stuck in. Obstacles include things such as monkey bars, ice baths, army crawls, wall climbs, rope climbs, rope nets, inflatables and even fire!

If your main goal is maximum mud (rather than maximum obstacles), head to our Mud runs & muddy races listings.

Obstacle races FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about obstacle runs and OCR events.

An OCR is a running event where obstacles are the main challenge — think walls, rope climbs, monkey bars, carries, crawls and technical terrain.

Yes. Many OCRs offer beginner waves and team-friendly formats where you can take your time and help each other. Start with shorter distances and prioritise completion over speed.

A bit of strength helps, especially grip and core, but it’s not a deal-breaker. You can often skip or penalty-loop obstacles. The best approach is consistent training and smart pacing.

Choose trail shoes for grip, snug gloves (optional) for rope/grip obstacles, and fitted kit that won’t snag. Avoid anything loose that can catch on walls or nets.

Mix easy running with 2 strength sessions weekly: pulling (rows), pushing (press-ups), legs (squats/lunges), and grip (dead hangs/farmer carries). If possible, practise trails and hills.

Often — but mud isn’t always the main point. If you want mud-first events, go to our Mud runs & muddy races listings.

Frequently, yes. Some events partner directly with charities or offer fundraising places. For charity-specific options, browse: Run for charity.
