Route overview

  • Llangattock Church is the perfect starting point for this event.
  • Leaving the field you head via a small but steep lane which leads onto a small section of the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal.
  • Minutes later you will be on the trail through fields and ancient walkways, before climbing to the top of the Llangattock Escarpment. The views here are out of this world! The climb will be worth it that we promise.
  • The Beautiful Black Mountains, Sugar Loaf and The Brecon Beacons will wow you!
  • Heading south towards the edge of the mountain your aim is to meet the great and worthy Lonely Shepherd, a photo with this incredible stone is a must.
  • Steeped in history and Welsh Folk tales. Leaving him to his sheep you will then head over open moorland, with the Clydach Gorge and its hidden waterfalls on the opposite valley, hosting signs of its long lost industrial industry, many features do still remain.
  • The open moorland will be more technical than strenuous but have no doubt they will challenge even the best!
  • Heading across the moors you will be on the mountain trails heading overland towards the Llangattock Escarpment with the famous caves below.
  • Running above the cave system on the Craig y Cilau you once again will be overwhelmed by the spectacular views.
  • Descending Mynydd Llangattock you enter into a beautiful valley of natural beauty hosting rivers and an abundance of wildlife and birds.
  • Crossing the Valley you will be mesmerized by its beauty.
  • Your final destination will take you into ancient woods and streams before facing the infamous incline descent, technical and tricky but fast!
  • Leaving the trails behind you rejoin the canal over a stone staircase that brings you back onto the small but beautiful section of the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal before you take your last trail into a wonderful forest arch and claim victory against the Beast.

Absolutely stunning course. The chance to run a 'fell race' type course that’s all marked out so no need for navigation skills and getting lost! The post-race snacks table is absolutely brilliant. One for the calendar every year for sure. Alex E

Breathtaking views, lovely varied route, plentiful, supportive marshals and fantastic feed stations with loads of water, fruit, nuts - perfect for such a scorching day and best of all at the end, salted boiled new potatoes! Delicious and filing. The smaller number of competitors meant this race had very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anna H

Lovely atmosphere, nice people, beautiful course. Everything what you need to have great run. Katarzyna B

Friendly atmosphere, well stocked aid stations. Great encouragement from the marshals and race team. Paul R

A really well run event, friendly atmosphere and stunning scenery. Would definitely recommend. Laura R

First event and certainly won't be the last, stunning location, well marked out course, feed stations well stocked and friendly, fantastic friendly finish line, felt like the first person who had crossed the finish line. Trudy H

It was a superbly organised event, small, friendly and challenging. The scenery was incredible and the terrain both beautiful and at times brutal but still so much fun. Jonathan L
