A hike in support of the homeless charity The Connection at St Martins
The hike is perfect for beginners or well seasoned pilgrims.
Please note that there will be stiles, uneven ground and steep slopes at points. Well behaved dogs are welcome on leads. Please bring your own food and drink. At Chilham village there are cafes and pubs but nothing on route.
Experience a historical pilgrimage route in one day. Connecting with the land, with downland, with woodland, with our heritage, with pilgrimage, with our ancestors (Neolithic, Roman), and with the homeless charity ‘The Connection’.
On this 11km hike the group will be led by two North Downs Way ambassadors who will be sharing their knowledge of the various points of interest along the way. Half way through the group will stop at the Coppice Oratory (a newly built artwork at the First Sighting of the Canterbury Cathedral), where the architects of the project will speak on the ideas and making of the Coppice Oratory.
The Connection have been supporting people sleeping rough to move away from the streets for over 100 years. The charity gets to know each person worked with. Many have been pushed to the edge, and they all have their own challenges to overcome. Everyone needs to find their own way home, but the connection goes with them every step of the journey. It often starts with a chat, the offer of a coffee and perhaps a hot meal or shower. Simple things that aren’t easy when you are living on the streets. The Connection works with people to recover from the streets so that they can move on to a meaningful, fulfilling and settled life, long into the future.
