Relay triathlons

Multi-sport events like triathlons are a fantastic way of mixing up your training and testing yourself at different disciplines. They also attract likeminded people, creating an atmosphere at events that exudes enthusiasm and confidence.

Sometimes, though, you just don't fancy doing all three sports. In that case, a relay triathlon is the perfect answer, where you share the swimming, cycling and running between three team members.

In a relay triathlon, the transition between team members occurs in the transition area and is monitored by event organisers to ensure that all normal rules are followed. Aside from that, the event experience is the same as a regular triathlon.

Most triathlons, from sprints to a full distance Ironman, offer the option to compete as a relay team. They are a great opportunity to test yourself in one of the disciplines - in a regular triathlon, you would never go all out on the bike as you need to keep energy in reserve for the run. As a relay cyclist, you can afford to put the hammer down and give your runner a head start on the competition. That's why relay teams will almost always finish ahead of regular competitors and have separate prize categories.
