1K - Royal Mile

The name 'Edinburgh' comes from the ancient Gaelic “Dun Eidyn” which means 'hill fort on the sloping ridge'. The Royal Mile runs down the East shoulder of this once active volcano and this is what gives the Royal mile its distinguishable geographical location. It was 325 million years ago during an ice age that the immense pressure of moving glaciers carved out its profile.

2K - Holyrood Palace

The Palace of Holyroodhouse, commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. The Queen is in residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse during Holyrood week, which usually takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July.

4K - Holyrood Park

Holyrood Park is a unique historic landscape in the heart of the city, whose dramatic crags and hills give Edinburgh part of its distinctive skyline. The park contains a wealth of history and archaeology spanning thousands of years.

5K - Grassmarket

First mentioned in the Registrum Magni Sigilii Regum Scotorum (1363) as “the street called Newbygging [new buildings] under the castle”, the Grassmarket was, from 1477, one of Edinburgh’s main market places, a part of which was given over to the sale of horse and cattle (the name apparently deriving from livestock grazing in pens beyond its western end). The view to the north, dominated by the castle, has long been a favourite subject of painters and photographers, making it one of the iconic views of the city.

10K - The finish line

Get ready for a stadium finish at the iconic BT Murrayfield Stadium. In 1897, the Scottish Football Union, as it was then called, bought land at Inverleith. This was the home of rugby in Scotland until the first Murrayfield Stadium was built in 1925, on ground bought from the Edinburgh Polo Club, and offers runners the opportunity of a rare grandstand finish.

This was my first ever run. It was well-organised and easy to attend and start. The run is very flat with a gradual uphill kilometre about 5K. Excellent finishing venue at Murrayfield Stadium where you finish in front of the cheering supporters in the stand. Now I’m hooked on running!

At the start there is a good atmosphere as you're surrounded by tall buildings at the top of the Royal Mile next to the castle. The run takes in tourist attractions in parts of the old town, Arthur’s Seat and the parliament. I would recommend this race to all abilities. William M

This was the first time I had done this race and I thought it was great. Craig W

A well organised closed-road race starting in the heart of Edinburgh's old town and finishing in Murrayfield Stadium. The course is great for beginners as it features a lot of downhill sections and none of the inclines are especially steep or challenging. Finishers receive a bag with a technical T-shirt, foil blanket, bottle of water and an Eat Natural fruit and nut bar and of course everyone gets a medal. Paul D

Personally I had a fantastic race managing a PB ... and a blistering sprint finish! It was my third year of running the race and probably my favourite 10K so far - a PB always helps! Paul D
