Welcome to WWF's unique, one-day mountain challenge in the heart of the Lake District!

You and the group will attempt to summit 10 peaks and cover a half marathon distance over the course of one day, over some of the most iconic mountains in the Lake District.

Starting from the town of Ambleside, this is a true mountain challenge. During the day, you will summit some of the most famous peaks in this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a fully supported challenge, with mountain leaders ensuring your safety and encouraging you every step of the way.

Timetable

  • 07:00 | Registration, meet your leaders and the rest of the team for a safety briefing
  • 18:00-19:00 | You should expect to be trekking for around 10-12 hours and to finish the challenge by approximately 6-7pm

Ability level

Graded 'extreme'.

This is perfect for adventurous types who have previous experience of strenuous mountain walking in the UK, and who are looking for their next challenge. You can tell your supporters that on your 10 Peaks Challenge you will be:

  • Trekking for around 10-12 hours 
  • Covering 21km (that's a half-marathon distance!) with 1,250m of ascent
  • Summiting 10 challenging peaks in the Lake District, including iconic Fairfield
  • Trekking across some of the wildest and most remote areas of the Lake District
  • Being self-sufficient when out on the hills; there are no resupply points during the days

Training

This is a long, sustained event of up to 12 hours and covers varied terrain. It requires a good to high level of fitness and you should not underestimate the importance of training beforehand. Training advice will be provided.

 There will be one challenge leader for approximately every 10-15 participants, and a member of WWF staff will join the challenge too.

Overview

Starting from the town of Ambleside, the group will begin the challenge with an ascent up to Red Screes. From here, descend a short way and head westwards towards the distinctive mountain of Fairfield, ticking off peaks on the way. After summiting Fairfield (the highest summit of the challenge at 873m)   descend back down into Ambleside, collecting the final two summits along the way before celebrating at the finish line with a view over the iconic mountain challenge!

Sustainability

  • The challenge organisers are committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. They ensure minimal impact on the local environment.  
  • Leaders care passionately for the environment and will be keen to talk to you about how you can do your bit to conserve the local area and enhance your experience. Acting responsibly adds to the enjoyment of the challenge.  
  • Hikers are encouraged to support the Lake District National Park Authority and local conservation charities.
  • All participants are encouraged to support local businesses by spending extra time in the local area, booking overnight accommodation or going out for a meal in one of the excellent local pubs after the challenge.
