The Northern Pennine Way Challenge is an unforgettable journey through the rugged heart of the Cheviot Hills.
After registering at Linbriggs Farm, participants are transported to one of three starting points – Byrness, Chew Green, or Rowhope Road End – before setting off on a stunning journey back.
All routes follow the Pennine Way, with a final push over Windy Gyle, one of the most iconic summits in the Cheviots. The grand finale sees you descend into the stunning Usway Burn Valley, before finishing at Linbriggs Farm, where a well-earned finisher’s goody bag awaits.

Overview
The 23-mile Northern Pennine Way Challenge is the longest and most rewarding route in this event.
Following some of the most spectacular and remote sections of the Pennine Way, this breathtaking challenge will take you through along the border ridge, deep valleys, and some of the most untouched landscapes in Northumberland.
After registering at Linbriggs Farm, you’ll be transported 25 miles north to Byrness, where your journey begins. From there, you’ll climb into the Cheviots, passing the source of the River Coquet, before joining the iconic Pennine Way Border Ridge.
Along the way, you’ll conquer Windy Gyle, navigate rugged moorland, and descend into the stunning Coquet Valley, finishing back at Linbriggs Farm.

- Byrness to Linbriggs Farm
- The most difficult of the three routes, featuring 3,000ft of ascent over some of the remotest terrain in the Cheviots
- Pass the source of the River Coquet, climb Byrness Hill, Black Halls, and Windy Gyle
- Experience the beauty of the Border Ridge before the final push through the Usway Burn Valley

- Byrness Hill and Houx Hill | The first climb, taking you into the Cheviots
- Coquet Head | The source of the River Coquet, marking a key point on your journey
- Chew Green & Black Halls | Skirting the remains of a Roman encampment before following the Border Ridge
- Checkpoint 1 (8.5 miles) - Lamb Hill Refuge Hut | A remote mountain shelter and landmark along the Pennine Way
- Beefstand Hill | A stunning remote trig point
- Windy Gyle Summit (2,031ft / 619m) | The most famous peak on the Border Ridge, offering unparalleled views
- Checkpoint 2 (15 miles) – Just before The Middle | A final checkpoint before descending into the Coquet Valley
- Fairhaugh & Usway Burn | A stunning descent into one of Northumberland’s most secluded valleys
- Shillmoor | The final stretch before the short walk back to the finish
- Finish at Linbriggs Farm | Cross the line and receive your well-earned finisher’s goody bag!
