Fell runs

Explore fell runs across the UK β€” fast, steep hill races rooted in British running tradition. From sharp local climbs to big mountain routes, use the filters to find fell races by date, location and region.

Fell running is one of the purest forms of racing in the UK. Courses are often short but intense, with brutal climbs, technical descents and minimal fuss. Many fell races are run on open hillsides, rough ground and mountain paths, with an emphasis on speed, strength and self-reliance.

Unlike trail runs, fell races are rarely heavily marked and often follow the most direct line up and down a hill rather than a winding path. Navigation skills can be useful, especially in poor weather, and mandatory kit is sometimes required for safety.

Fell runs vary widely in length and difficulty, from sharp local blasts to longer mountain routes. If you’re new to fell running, start with shorter races on familiar terrain and build experience gradually.

Use the filters to browse upcoming fell races by region β€” and be ready for some of the toughest running the UK has to offer.

Fell runs are typically steeper, shorter and less marked than trail races, often taking the most direct line up and down a hill. If you prefer longer, clearly marked off-road routes on paths and tracks, explore our trail runs calendar.

Some are. Shorter local fell races can be beginner-friendly if you’re comfortable on hills. Start small, choose familiar terrain and build experience gradually.

Basic navigation can be helpful, especially in poor weather or on less-marked courses. Some races require carrying a map or compass.

Many fell races require trail shoes with good grip. Some also mandate waterproofs, hat, gloves or emergency kit depending on conditions.

Usually not. Most fell races are relatively short but very demanding. For longer off-road challenges, explore ultra runs or mountain marathons.

Many runners progress from fell races to navigation-led challenges that combine endurance with route choice. If you enjoy hills and self-reliance, take a look at mountain marathons for multi-day, map-based adventures.

Yes. Some runners take the skills and confidence gained in fell races into much longer challenges. If you’re ready for big days on rugged terrain, browse our ultra runs to find endurance-focused events across the UK.
