Overview
The Slateman Legend is the ultimate endurance challenge in Eryri (Snowdonia), combining a mountain swim, an epic full-mountain cycle loop and a brutally memorable double-lap run. Beginning with a swim in Llyn Padarn beneath Yr Wyddfa, the route then embarks on one of the most spectacular cycling journeys in North Wales before finishing with two demanding laps of the iconic Slateman run through slate quarries, forests and historic landscapes. This is a true test of strength, resilience and mountain grit.
Description
The Legend cycle route takes in some of the most iconic views in North Wales, beginning with a swim in Llyn Padarn in the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), surrounded by the history of Slate Mining in the Welsh hills.
Begin the cycle by climbing up the famous Llanberis Pass to Pen y Pass alongside Yr Wyddfa, before turning left and heading towards Capel Curig, the home of the National Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin. Passing Llyn Mymbyr and Moel Siabod, the views on this section are not to be missed! At Capel Curig, you’ll turn left again and cycle towards Bethesda, going through the mountainous paradise of the Ogwen Valley. You pass many of Wales' most famous and iconic peaks: Tryfan, Glyder Fach and Fawr and the start of the Carneddau mountain range. Before getting into Bethesda proper, you’ll turn left towards Tregarth and make your way along the less hilly, but still challenging, lower flanks. At this point, the route joins the Standard triathlon route, and you will turn right towards Caernarfon. As you flow around the course towards Beddgelert, make sure you keep an eye out on your left because you’re circumnavigating Yr Wyddfa! Once you’re through the beautiful, quaint village of Beddgelert, you’ve got one last challenge to come. You must now cycle up the narrow and winding Nant Gwynant Pass and return to the top of Pen y Pass. Make sure you take in some of the most spectacular views in the country before you descend back to Llanberis and transition.
The Slateman Legend run is two laps of the Standard distance run. The run starts relatively easy but no less beautiful than the rest of the route, taking in the historic Dolbadarn Castle; as you run past Llyn Peris at the foot of the Dinorwic Slate Quarry, don’t lose your nerve when you see what is to come. A 2km climb up the zig zags through the quarry takes your legs and your breath away, especially when you look around at where you are. Carrying on through this most awesome man-made landscape for another 1.5km, you then come to the descent into the forest. Heading then towards Fachwen and a short section of road, followed by a steep descent once more into the trees. You will then make your way along the beautiful trails of Parc Padarn and past the Old Quarry Hospital as you make your descent down to the lap point to do it all again! Once you get to the final straight to the finish line, you will, by now, have some idea of what it means to call yourself a Slateman Legend.

I have been racing for 30+ years and this was not only a superb setting with outstanding scenery on the bike and run but also the toughest 70:3 run I’ve ever raced. Well organised; all the marshals and team were happy and helpful, would certainly recommend as a race to do. 2025 Participant
I entered this event based on reviews and after the fantastic time I had at the Sandman Triathlon the previous September. I cannot fault any part of the event. A stunning and demanding route on both the bike and run really pushed me, and I could have kept swimming in the lake for ages. Brilliant marshal support and organisation in Llanberis meant everything worked perfectly. I would certainly recommend this event to anyone ready for a proper challenge in beautiful surroundings. I will definitely return and hope to fit in the whole adventure series next year. Helen W
My review is long and detailed because I couldn’t find any sprint-distance-specific reviews when I was researching the race. If you are thinking about entering next year — do it, but be prepared. Claire F
A choice of four triathlon distances set in the beautiful scenery of Snowdonia. Cold open-water swim with challenging hilly run and bike courses. Meirion M
