Ultra marathons are some of the greatest tests of endurance on the planet and yield unforgettable experiences - if you're well prepared.

Ultra marathon FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about running an ultra marathon.

Any running event longer than the marathon distance of 26.2 miles is classed as an ultra. Formats range from trail ultras and looped courses to long point-to-point challenges.

Some ultras welcome first-timers, especially shorter-distance or looped formats. Others require experience due to technical terrain or long cut-off times. Always check the event details before entering.

Many ultras take place on trails or mixed terrain, but some are run on roads or cycle paths. Use the filters to choose the surface and route style you prefer.

Training time varies with distance and terrain, but most runners spend 12–20 weeks preparing for a shorter ultra and longer for more demanding events.

Ultras often require items such as hydration packs, waterproof layers, head torches and nutrition supplies. Check the mandatory kit list for each event.
