Shoes and kit for ultra running

Shoes and kit for ultra running

An ultra runner may be exerting his/her body for several hours on a fairly regular basis, so great care is needed in the selection of clothing suitable for the conditions. Forget the simple shorts, vest and shoes needed for an ordinary run - Dave Walsh goes through the equipment you'll need for an ultra.

As an ultra runner may be exerting his/her body for a considerable number of hours on a fairly regular basis, great care is needed in the selection of clothing suitable for the conditions expected. For an extended distance - for instance 24 hours - you might use:

  • Several pairs of good training shoes*
  • Socks
  • Vests and shorts
  • Light t-shirts
  • Running tights
  • Windproof jacket/pants
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket
  • Spare warm layer
  • Cap/hat
  • Gloves
  • Rucksack/bumbag
  • Sunglasses
  • Petroleum jelly/anti-chafe cream
  • Any special food
Some runners also like to take an Ipod or similar for entertainment. All the kit must be well tried and tested on longer runs before being used in competition.

*It is worth pointing out that during the longer ultras such as 12 and 24 hour-long races, a runners feet may swell by as much as a size-and-a-half, so several pairs of shoes may be needed.
