Training and health in veteran running

Generally the health requirements for veterans when training and competing are the same as for any other athletes, but two things should be noted.

1. It usually takes longer to recover from injuries, due to a variety of ageing factors, and it is obviously not possible to maintain training regimes as rigorously as previously. A sensible approach of listening to your body rather than following your schedules of twenty years ago is preferable!

2. A potentially sensitive issue is medication. Certain treatments which are used to maintain quality of life for older people may necessitate the use of substances which are normally prohibited for competitive sportspeople.

Hormone treatments, heart drugs, and various chemical therapies may all involve taking IAAF prohibited substances. Advice is available, but it is worth being aware that athletes have been banned, though thankfully vary rarely.
