The full monty for outdoor enthusiasts!
Sitting on the eastern edge of the Peak District National Park, Sheffield is a top destination for anyone seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes. With a creative culture rooted in the love of the outdoors there's no shortage of both organised events and self-guided adventures in the area.
To the north of the city, the beautiful woodland areas of Wharncliffe, Grenoside and Wheata are full of marked, self-guided trails ideal for walking and trail running whatever your ability. More challenging routes can be found in nearby Ecclesall Woods.
With plenty of big name events like the Tour de France under its belt, Sheffield is a major cycling city. Cyclists will find beautiful roads, urban cyclo cross, and spectacular mountain biking trails all within the city or just a few miles away.
Despite its nickname of the ‘Steel City’, Sheffield has more trees per capita than any other major European city and acres of public green space. The city's eastern suburbs officially lie within the Peak District National Park. Nearby, the wildlife reserves of Sunnybank and Crabtree Ponds provide public walking trails as well as the chance to see rare wildlife.
The 2017 Tour de Yorkshire reached its climax in Sheffield, and the city has an enthusiastic community of runners, riders, ramblers and all-round outdoor enthusiasts.
