The world's leading 10-mile running event starting at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Make a family weekend of it! Join Alzheimer's Society at the Great South Run and receive a running top, training guides and fundraising support.
Portsmouth may be famous for its maritime and naval history but for one weekend in October it becomes a hub of land-based activity as 24,000+ runners head for Southsea for a range of running events, the daddy of which is the Great South Run.
The route itself starts off on Clarence Parade between Southsea Common and the D-Day Museum. From there you’ll head on up the seafront before darting inland and running past Portsmouth Cathedral, the Spinnikar Tower and the iconic HMS Victory.
Once past the famous ship you’ll head further inland, eventually heading back out for a final, and hopefully quick, burst by the sea to finish - with stunning views over the Isle of Wight.
Runners can find training advice, preparation tips, important race details and exclusive offers on the free Great Run App. Friends and family can also use the app, to track your progress in real time and get an estimated finish time for to see you cross the line.
"First race I ever entered so will always be special...great experience, loved the bands and the crowds"
"An amazing race and will defo be going back next year to do it all again!"
With the perfect blend of historic and modern sights, there is something for everyone in Portsmouth and Southsea.
If you are looking for things to do in the popular waterfront city, why not head for a walk around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and marvel at HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum, which houses Henry VIII’s flagship that sank in 1545.
Raising money for charity is a big part of the Great South Run experience for many runners. It's also the best way of securing your place at this popular 10-mile run.
