Multi-terrain runs
Multi-terrain runs mix surfaces—tarmac, compact trail, park paths and the odd muddy section—so you get the best of road and off-road in one event. Use the filters to find a multi-terrain run near you, or browse upcoming races across the UK. Read more
Multi-terrain runs sit in the sweet spot between pure road races and full-on trail adventures. You’ll often start on firm ground, dip onto tracks and paths, then switch back again—great for runners who want variety without committing to technical terrain all day.
Because surfaces change, pacing changes too. Expect a more 'run smart' experience: steady effort, adaptable stride, and shoes that can handle a little of everything. Some events keep things friendly and fast with well-made paths, while others lean into rougher tracks for a bigger challenge.
Scroll the listings, switch to map view, and use date and region filters to pick an event that matches your goal—first multi-terrain run, a confidence-building stepping stone to trail, or a fun race-day mix-up.

Multi-terrain running FAQs
Answers to the most common questions about multi-terrain and mixed-terrain runs.
A multi-terrain run is a race that combines more than one surface type—typically road plus off-road paths such as trail, park tracks, towpaths or woodland routes. The mix varies by event, so check the listing details before choosing shoes and pacing.
Most runners do best in road-to-trail or light trail shoes with decent grip but not aggressive lugs. If the route is mostly tarmac, road shoes can work. If it’s wet, muddy or includes rough tracks, lean trail.
Yes—many mixed-surface races use well-made paths and gentle gradients, making them a brilliant first step beyond road running. Use the filters to find shorter distances and 'beginner-friendly' events where available.
Multi-terrain runs mix surfaces (often including road sections), while trail runs are typically off-road for most or all of the route. If you want predominantly off-road events, browse our trail runs page.
They can—multi-terrain races build adaptable pacing and confidence on changing surfaces. If you’re ready for steeper routes and more navigation-led challenges, explore mountain marathons.
