Overview
The Sprint Duathlon at the Superfeet Sandman offers a dynamic, off-road challenge perfect for athletes seeking a fast-paced, multi-terrain race. Competitors begin with a 2km run through the rugged trails of Newborough Forest, transitioning to a 23km bike ride that weaves through scenic lanes and coastal roads. The final 5.4km run brings participants back to the forest trails, concluding with a stretch along the sandy beach. With strict cut-off times ensuring a competitive atmosphere, this event is ideal for those looking to push their limits in a breathtaking natural setting.
Route description
Starting under the Finish Line arch, you will run up the toll road for a short way before turning off into the beautiful trails of Newborough Forest. You’ll hit the sandy track and even get to run along the beach with views out to the Llyn Peninsula before heading back into transition and out onto the bike.
Don’t believe the rumours that this Island is flat! There are plenty of climbs and descents on the bike route to keep you on your toes. Starting from the transition in the heart of Newborough Forest, you climb up to the village of Newborough and take a right. Heading along sweeping bends and fast straights, you will then take a left towards Llangaffo, where the roads get noticeably narrower and deserve some respect. Flowing down through the marshlands towards Malltraeth, you will then turn left again back onto the main road in the direction of Newborough. Descend the forest road once more and into transition, ready to get your running shoes on.
The run takes place on the rugged trails of Newborough Forest. Running through the trees and down along the dunes is both wonderful and gruelling. The last 1.5km is almost entirely on sand, but it only makes the accomplishment all the more rewarding.
Route highlights
- Run start under the finish arch, climbing briefly up the toll road before diving into the trails of Newborough Forest
- Sandy tracks and beach running, with open views across to the Llŷn Peninsula before returning to transition
- A bike course that proves the island isn’t flat, delivering constant climbs and descents to keep you working
- Climb out of transition to Newborough village, flowing through sweeping bends and fast straights
- Narrow rural roads towards Llangaffo, demanding focus as you roll through open marshland towards Malltraeth
- Fast return via Newborough, descending the forest road back into transition for the final leg
- Rugged trail run through Newborough Forest, weaving between trees and along dramatic dune paths
- A brutal sandy finish, with the final 1.5km on sand making every step to the line feel earned

This was an event I had wanted to do after seeing it on TV and it did not disappoint. Everything was well set up and organised, with stunning views throughout from the sea swim to the forest run. It’s not an easy course with sea swimming and trail and sand running, but it’s definitely one I would return to. Pre-event and race-day information from Always Aim High was excellent. Highly recommended. Craig T
If I were only going to do one triathlon, this would be it. It’s well organised and set in a spectacularly beautiful location. The organisers were incredibly helpful when I needed to transfer an entry. Watching the Welsh Triathlon Series programme afterwards was a lovely bonus and really brought the experience back. Ruth P
Sandman Sprint Triathlon was brilliant. Very well organised in a stunning location with an ideal sea swim, great bike route and an interesting trail run. Staff were helpful and safety well managed, even when a diversion was needed. The finish experience was excellent and camping nearby worked really well. I loved it. Ruth P
Second time racing here and it remains the most beautiful and challenging triathlon I’ve done. From the choppy sea swim to the forest bike and beach finish run, everything about this event is special. Friendly marshals, a glorious location and a fantastic day out — no wonder it sells out. Tom F
The best triathlon I have ever done. A stunning location with a breathtaking Snowdonia backdrop, a challenging course, brilliant organisation, plenty of marshals and easy registration. You won’t regret signing up. Tom B
A unique and unforgettable event in a stunning location. Registration was slick and the event village had a great atmosphere. The sea swim was challenging but well managed, the bike route excellent and the run varied, beautiful and tough. A brilliant spectator-friendly event and a fantastic way to finish the series. Kate L
My first time doing this event and I knew as the sun rose over the beach it was going to be special. The course challenged me with my first sea swim, a hilly bike and a beautiful beach finish run. Organisation and support were perfect and I would thoroughly recommend this event. Helen W
I love this race. It’s a home event for me and really shows how beautiful Newborough is. With a sheltered bay swim, off-road run through forest and beach, and a central event village, it’s a spectacular triathlon. Sian W
I raced the full distance after saying “never again” the year before due to the waves — but I came back better prepared. A tough but rewarding course and a fantastic event once again. Sian A
Another fantastic triathlon to finish off the season. Our whole club uses this as a weekend away and it always delivers. A fast, friendly event that suits all abilities. Edward G
A must-do for all levels. Calm sea swim, well-organised transition, undulating bike course with stunning scenery and a great overall race experience. Chris K
I absolutely loved this event as my first Olympic-distance triathlon. Great setup, excellent organisation, stunning scenery and real value for money. I will definitely race again. Philip L
My first time at Sandman and it certainly won’t be my last. Communication was spot on, registration hassle free and staying nearby made it even better. A superbly organised event. Paul B
Fantastic race in an amazing location. Adrian M
Such a beautiful spot for a triathlon with rolling bike routes, gorgeous woodland and stunning views. Well organised as always, with only a small niggle around transition layout. Chris F
I was lucky with the weather and it made a big difference to enjoyment. Generally very well organised, but you do need to allow plenty of time if you’re driving. A great race overall. Lawrie P
